Greenwood Academy students attended a California Golden Bears women’s basketball game against the Clemson Tigers on Feb. 26 that served as a Black History Month celebration.

The event marked the first visit to a college campus for many of the students and focused on collegiate culture, according to the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD).

During halftime, the university hosted a Black Culture Appreciation Night ceremony to honor 16 black leaders for their service to the campus and community. Honorees included Dr. Amber Johnson, assistant vice chancellor and chief of staff for the Division of Equity and Inclusion. The women’s basketball team, led by Head Coach Charmin Smith, wore Black Appreciation shirts during warm-ups featuring the names of the 16 recognized individuals.
