The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Division received a $170,000 grant to improve how it tests for alcohol and drugs in DUI cases. The grant comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The county’s crime lab will use the money to buy new equipment for analyzing alcohol and other substances. The funding also pays for supplies to help staff detect illegal, prescription, and over-the-counter drugs that are often involved in DUI cases.

The project runs through September 2026. The goal is to provide more accurate and faster evidence for police and prosecutors to use in court.

“This grant will improve testing capabilities, analysis, and turnaround times at the Forensic Services Division,” said Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston. “Having rapid results will benefit county law enforcement agencies and prosecutors and improve public safety.”
