Got a New Year’s resolution centered on making a difference in the community? Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) is seeking volunteers, who are integral to its operations.
“We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to help with dog walking and playgroups,” stated CCAS. “This is a paws-itively great way to spend meaningful time with our dogs while helping them stay happy, healthy and well-socialized.” Volunteers must be 18 years or older to sign up, according to the county-operated animal care and control agency. Other qualifications are the ability to follow directions and communicate with staff, fellow volunteers and the public. Having a positive attitude amid the agency’s inclusive environment is also emphasized. A minimum commitment of 8 hours of volunteering per month for 6 months is also requested.
So how many volunteers does CCAS need? “As many as we can get,” said Volunteer Coordinator Doreen Spinney.
Spinney shared the many reasons volunteers love their roles, ranging from “interacting with the animals” to “making friends, both human and animal.” For many, the work is “a labor of love for the dogs and cats” and a way of “making a difference.” As one volunteer put it, “I am so happy when an animal gets adopted; I love watching people walk out the door with their new family member.”
Volunteers can apply online and should expect a two-hour training session at CCAS.
Essential functions of the animal care and control agency include animal welfare, enforcement of state/local animal laws, adoptions, licensing and community support.
“If you’re ready for tail-wagging fun, slobbery kisses and lots of happy paws, we’d love to have you join our team,” stated CCAS.
