New Chevron public affairs rep eager to put down roots in Richmond
Eva Hernandez

Chevron Richmond’s newest public affairs representative has only been in the Bay Area a few weeks, but she’s already learning two things fast: where to find good food and how important relationships are in her new hometown.

Eva Hernandez arrived in late November and is now living in El Sobrante, where her hopes of being a low-key, introverted neighbor quickly faded.

“I usually go home and I’m a hermit,” she joked. “My neighbors didn’t give me that option. They all wanted to get to know me, and it’s been fantastic.”

Hernandez joins Chevron Richmond after more than two years working in Iowa, supporting the company’s renewable fuels operations. In Richmond, she’ll focus on building and maintaining relationships with neighborhood councils, community groups, local business leaders and her colleagues.

“It’s really about building trust,” she said. “Our team has already done a great job, and I want to continue that effort while finding new ways to partner with the community.”

From Houston roots to biofuels in Iowa

Hernandez grew up in the Houston area and began her Chevron career in real estate and facilities operations before taking advantage of the company’s development programs to move into communications.

When Chevron acquired Renewable Energy Group (REG), she jumped at the chance to support its integration, relocating to Des Moines as a change management and communications specialist.

“Learning about biofuels was fascinating,” she said. “Seeing how farmers and the agricultural industry connect to our business was eye-opening. And watching how soybean oil becomes fuel, that was incredible.”

The Iowa assignment also strengthened her interest in public affairs and sharpened her communication and relationship-building skills.

Finding her voice through employee networks

Hernandez credits Chevron’s employee networks with helping her grow as a communicator and leader. Back in Houston, she joined Somos, the network aimed at supporting Latin and Hispanic employees, eventually becoming its global communications director. She also supports the Black Employee Network, the Women’s Network and others. These networks all operate at Chevron Richmond, as well.

The networks are voluntary, employee-led groups that bring together people with shared identities or interests to foster an inclusive and supportive work environment for all employees.

“These networks were the first place where I learned public speaking,” she said. “They helped me build confidence, build my own community, and learn how different parts of Chevron operate.”

While in Iowa, she co-led the Inclusion and Diversity Council, helping employees from the acquired REG business adjust to Chevron’s structure and programs.

“At first there was hesitation,” she said. “But once people saw the tools and support available, they really appreciated it.”

Settling into Richmond

Since landing in El Sobrante just before Thanksgiving, Hernandez has been exploring, starting with the local restaurants.

“I’m so grateful for delicious food that’s super close,” she said. Her early favorite: Mi Casa in Richmond, which she visited “four times in one week” while sampling her way through the menu.

She’s also eager to take advantage of the area’s trails and shoreline.

“I love hiking and cycling,” she said. “I’m ready to get my bike out again. I just need something not too downhill—I’m not confident with that yet,” she said with a laugh.

Hernandez said she is approaching her role in Richmond with curiosity and openness. Her goal in Richmond is clear: keep building trust, one authentic relationship at a time.

“I’m really trying to learn about the region and understand its history,” she said. “There’s a lot to take in, and a lot of people I’m excited to meet.”
