Richmond nonprofit Keyz 2 the Future brought holiday cheer to more than 130 children on Dec. 21 at the Richmond Recreation Center with its annual Family Holiday Celebration & Youth Barbering Expo.
The event gave families warm clothes, toys, shoes, coats, gift cards and free grooming services. Barbers from HeBlendz, led by John Holman, cut hair for kids, and Hair Art by Brittney braided girls’ hair—services many parents say are usually too expensive.
Since 2020, Keyz 2 the Future has grown its reach, bringing resources directly to communities hit hardest by gun violence and immigration enforcement. Families came from Richmond, Oakland and even Reno to join the celebration.
The event also gave back to adults rebuilding their lives. One participant in re-entry received a $1,000 anonymous donation to help with basic needs.
Midway through the celebration, the gym turned into a youth barbering expo, where young people showed off fades, line-ups and trims. The crowd cheered as kids demonstrated confidence and skill.
For founder Keycha Gallon, the day had special meaning: Dec. 21 is the birthday of her brother, lost to gun violence in 1973. Gallon says the event turns grief into action and reflects her mission to make sure no family heals alone.
