The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has expanded its support services for crime victims by introducing Fenner, a two-year-old black golden lab mix with a unique brindle coat, as its second courthouse facility dog. Fenner joins Bear, the office’s first facility dog, in providing comfort and emotional support to victims during legal proceedings.

Fenner and her handler, Victim-Witness Advocate Jackie Vizcarrondo, recently completed an intensive two-week training program with Canine Companions, a nonprofit organization specializing in training assistance dogs. The duo successfully passed their Assistance Dogs International (ADI) field testing and final exams, officially becoming a certified Facility Team.

Facility dogs like Fenner play a crucial role in the legal system by providing a calming presence for victims, particularly children, during interviews and court testimonies. Their presence can help alleviate anxiety and provide a sense of safety and support during what can be an incredibly stressful experience.

Bear, the office’s first facility dog, has been instrumental in assisting victims since his placement in 2019. Trained by Canine Companions, Bear has been credited with helping victims, especially children, feel more at ease during interviews and court proceedings .contracosta.ca.gov

The addition of Fenner to the team underscores the District Attorney’s Office’s commitment to supporting victims through innovative and compassionate means. Facility dogs like Fenner and Bear not only aid in the emotional well-being of victims but also contribute to the effectiveness of the legal process by helping individuals provide more accurate and complete testimonies.
