The City of El Cerrito proclaimed May 25, 2025, as “George Floyd Remembrance Day.”
The proclamation recognizes the fifth anniversary of Floyd’s death on May 20, 2020, at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer — and in a case of police violence that ignited a global outcry for racial justice and police accountability.
The city also announced that the Black Lives Matter flag will be flown at City Hall from Saturday to Sunday in observance of the day.
Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd and his wife Keeta Floyd, representing the Philonise and Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, joined the El Cerrito City Council meeting virtually to accept a city proclamation in Floyd’s honor.
Mayor Carolyn Wysinger will also join the Floyd family this weekend for an event to honor the five-year anniversary of Floyd’s death in Houston, TX, according to the city.
“As we mark this solemn fifth anniversary, we remember George Floyd and the profound impact his death had on our collective consciousness,” said Mayor Wysinger said in a statement. “In El Cerrito, our commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion remains steadfast, and this anniversary is a reminder of the work that still lies ahead across the country and here in the Bay Area.”
