Lifelong Richmond resident April Wright’s Symphony Enterprises is producing “Chicken, Chitlins and Caviar,” a music revue appearing June 8-9 at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek
With “Chicken, Chitlins and Caviar” representing gospel, blues and jazz, the 90 minute Broadway-style review explores the African American experience through the universal lens of music—with food as the overriding metaphor.
The message behind the show is that music has no boundaries, regardless of a person’s age, culture and ethnicity and that it affects everyone in different ways, said April’s mother, Dr. Betty Wright. “We are attempting to immerse people in African American culture and using food to describe the music,” added April, who also hosts “The Gospel Experience” on KPFA.
April Wright is not only producing the show, but also singing in it, noting that all the principal ladies in the production are more than 60 years old. “We have fun and have lived the power of music most of our lives,” said April. Along with a journey through different musical genres, dancing ensues.
She said the show is Symphony Enterprises’ third one at the center and the first since the pandemic.
General admission tickets to “Chicken, Chitlins and Caviar” range from $60 to $80 and can be bought here. VIP tickets including a talk and more are also available. The Lesher Center for the Arts is located at 1601 Civic Dr. in Walnut Creek.
