The Richmond community was taken out to the ball game on Saturday, Sept. 7, part of an annual tradition that’s sponsored by Chevron Richmond in partnership with the Oakland Athletics.
Chevron invited 150 community members, many of them children, to watch the A’s defeat the Detroit Tigers 10-2 on Star Wars Fireworks Night at Oakland Coliseum. Families represented multiple local organizations, including Groundwork Richmond, Richmond Police Activities League, Shields-Red Community Center, Soulful Softball Sunday and the Multicultural Center.
The Richmond contingent were provided transportation and dinner, and local youth got to visit and play around in the Chevron STEM Zone at the stadium, where kids can learn about science through fun, interactive activities that relate to the game of baseball.
Cleana Miller, representing the annual Richmond community gathering, Soulful Softball Sunday, described the A’s outing as community bonding.
“We’re not blood, but we’re family,” Miller said. “We’re from Richmond.”
Added Diana Brown, “It’s wonderful, and especially great for the kids.”
To cap the night off, the group enjoyed a spectacular fireworks show.
