Renewable energy company Raven SR announced today it received a key air permit from the Bay Area Air District to build a waste-to-hydrogen production facility in Richmond.
The plant, located at the closed Republic Services landfill, will convert up to 99 tons of organic waste daily into about 2,400 metric tons of hydrogen annually, without combustion.
Backed by Chevron and others, the project has been years in the making, with a groundbreaking planned for 2026 pending final permits and financing. It’s the first project of its kind in California to receive full air-quality clearance.
Hydrogen produced at the plant will be delivered to nearby fueling stations for both passenger and commercial fuel cell vehicles. CEO Matt Murdock said the permit “marks a major milestone,” adding that the facility will prove waste can be converted directly into clean fuel without combustion or toxic byproducts.
