Richmond firefighters battled a fire at the former Walgreens store in the downtown shopping center in the 1200 block of Macdonald Avenue around 2:30 a.m. today.
First-arriving crews discovered smoke and visible flames issuing from the roofline of the building, according to Richmond Firefighters Local 188, the union representing city firefighters. Crews located and extinguished the flames. Firefighters remained at the scene for several extra hours to monitor and eliminate hot spots to ensure the fire was fully suppressed.
No details are yet available regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of property damage. There were no reports of injuries.
The Walgreens closed at that location early this year.
