The holiday season marks the return of a Richmond favorite: the Richmond Fire & Police Holiday Program, now celebrating over 30 years of service. On Wednesday, Richmond Firefighters Local 188 announced the kickoff of this year’s drive, which provides toys, food, and holiday cheer to local families.
Sign-ups open Saturday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m. through the program’s official website. Applications are limited to the first 600 families, and all West Contra Costa County residents are eligible. Selected families will receive gifts, food, and a chance to win a new bicycle at the Dec. 20 giveaway event.
Organizers are also inviting community suppor. Donations of new, unwrapped toys, financial contributions and volunteer help are all welcome. “Every bit helps us bring more joy to local families this holiday season,” said Local 188.
The program began in 1989, when firefighter Rod Woods organized a small toy drive that later joined forces with a police food distribution effort. Today, it’s a citywide tradition backed by local businesses such as Chevron, nonprofits like Richmond Rotaryand countless volunteers. Fire stations across Richmond continue to serve as drop-off sites, keeping the spirit of giving alive in every neighborhood.
