The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office officially welcomed its newest team member Fenner, a professionally trained facility dog dedicated to supporting victims and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process.

Fenner was sworn in by District Attorney Diana Becton earlier this week. Trained by Canine Companions, a nonprofit organization specializing in assistance dogs, Fenner is tasked with providing emotional support to individuals navigating the often stressful environment of courtrooms and legal proceedings. Her presence aims to reduce anxiety and help victims, especially children, communicate more effectively during interviews and testimony.

Fenner joins Bear, the office’s first facility dog, who has been serving since 2019.

Both dogs were provided at no cost by Canine Companions, which breeds and trains dogs specifically for service roles, including work with law enforcement and legal agencies. Fenner underwent extensive training to prepare for her role in the courtroom, ensuring she can remain calm and supportive in high-stress situations.
