The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) “kicked off” a new intramural flag football program this school year, with the overriding aim of boosting female participation in sports.

The women’s flag football league’s inaugural games brought in teams from six high schools playing at Pinole Valley High on Saturday, Sept. 9. The games, which included Kennedy High School (pictured), lasted 40 minutes each and were played on half the field, according to the district.

“This initiative supports California’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women in athletics,” stated the WCCUSD, noting that participation in flag football has tripled since last year.

The district’s flag football participants are volunteers, said the WCCUSD, collectively making it a community driven effort as opposed to an official league.

Want to check out a game? Kennedy High School will host flag football games Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to Noon. At 10 a.m., Hercules High will play El Cerrito High and Kennedy High will play Pinole Valley High. Things will switch up at 11 a.m. when Kennedy takes on El Cerrito and Hercules plays Pinole.

Kennedy High School is located at 4300 Cutting Blvd. in Richmond. “Join us in supporting our young athletes as they embark on this exciting journey in women’s flag football,” said the WCCUSD.
