A 30-year-old Richmond man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run vehicular collision involving a pedestrian in San Pablo on Saturday, Aug. 24.
The collision occurred around 8:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of 23rd Street. First responders located a 51-year-old Richmond man suffering from major injuries and learned the vehicle involved had fled prior to their arrival, according to the San Pablo Police Department. The pedestrian, who has not yet been notified pending notification of family, died at the scene.
Police determined the suspect vehicle to be a silver Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on 23rd Street. For an undetermined reason, the car veered into the northbound lane of 23rd Street and collided with the pedestrian, who was traveling within the roadway, police said.
About an hour after the collision, the suspect vehicle was located unoccupied in Richmond. An investigation determined the driver to be Charles Michael Johnson III of Richmond. After a warrant was obtained for his arrest, police located Johnson on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the 2700 block of El Portal Drive in San Pablo. He was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, police said.
