A GoFundMe aims to support the family of a Richmond couple who lost their lives in a three-car crash in Southern California last weekend that was caused by a driver who was allegedly under the influence.
About 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, Jose Lozano and his wife Luz Duran Rios were driving on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad and were on their way to Los Cabos, Mexico, when the tragic accident occurred, according to news reports and the couple’s family.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that Angela Hays of Corona was driving a Hyundai sedan that allegedly crashed into a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing the Jeep to overturn. A Nissan Altima then collided with the Jeep.
According to authorities, Lozano and Rios were in the Jeep. Rios died at the scene while her husband passed away at a hospital. The driver of the Nissan reportedly suffered major but not life threatening injuries.
Hays was not injured and was arrested at the scene on multiple felony charges.
Lozano and Ruiz leave behind six children and eight grandchildren, stated Eric Lozano, the youngest son of Jose who organized the GoFundMe.
“We are collecting funds to help with transporting them from San Diego back home to Richmond, California and for their funeral service,” he said. “We know everyone who knew them loved them dearly and will be happy to contribute but please do not feel obligated if it will create any hardship.”
Eric Lozano added that any proceeds not used for his parents’ service will go towards an organization that spreads awareness about driving under the influence.
