After being ravaged by a fire in 2018, the El Sobrante Library rose from the ashes and reopened to the public the following year on Sept. 19, 2019. In honor of that milestone, Library officials will host the "5th Birthday" of the remodeled space from 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23. The party will include crafts and activities for all ages, face painting, commemorative button making, a local author book display and fun and creative photo opportunities. It will culminate at 2:30 p.m. with a lion dance and kung fu performance. "We're throwing a party to celebrate this milestone with entertainment and activities for all ages," Library officials said. After the 2018 fire, the Library building was "stripped down to the studs and rebuilt with accessible features, a modern design, and a whole new feeling," they said.

The Friends of the El Sobrante Library (FESL) is inviting the community to a book sale at the Library.

The book sale will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Library at 4191 Appian Way in El Sobrante. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Library programs.

Members can peruse books for sale from 10 a.m. till noon, while the general public is invited in from noon to 2 p.m.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, FESL is offering special pricing on romance hardcover and paperback books at 50 cents apiece. That alone could bring in buyers — earlier this month, Contra Costa County Library announced that the most popular genre borrowed among its vast catalog last year was romance.

This Saturday’s book sale also offers the option of purchasing four small paperbacks for $1.
