It’s only been in business for about four months, but this Richmond barber shop is so far making the cut.
One big reason is affordability: The Hook Up Barber and Braiding Shop at 12981 San Pablo Ave. in Richmond, near the corner of Lowell Avenue, offers $5 haircuts for kids and $10 for adults.
Another big reason is Fred Johnson, the master barber and entrepreneur, a Richmond native who has the support from the community, and thus has a shop brimming with customers.
“I try to have realistic prices…I realize times are hard in Richmond financially for people and families,” Johnson said.
Johnson said his favorite part of running The Hook Up is being able to provide a service the people of Richmond.
“I’m a Richmond native so I love being down here with the people,” he said. “That’s the best part.”
He said, “I am here to help make a difference and give back to our community.”
When awaiting a haircut, patrons can also do a bit of clothing shopping. Johnson has several lines of clothing for men and women., including the 500 Luxury Brand for men that includes tee shirts, sporting shirts and jogging suits.
