The Renegade Orchestra—an 18-piece ensemble that ā€œbreaks all the rulesā€ā€”is performing at Richmond’s Riggers Loft Sat., Nov. 20 at 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.

Reps describe the Bay Area orchestra as ā€œthrowing out all the conventions of a quiet, sleepy, stuffy show of musicians locked in straitjackets of tradition.ā€ Audience members can expect virtuosic orchestra musicians with a ā€œhard drivin’ rhythm sectionā€ that will perform wide-ranging works from composers like Nina Simone, Miles Davis, the Mamas and the Papas and the disco queen herself, Donna Summer.

Conductor Jason Eckl said the music the orchestra will be performing ā€œpushes a lot of boundaries with what an orchestra can doā€ even though the music is familiar and more ā€œtoe-tappin’ rock and rollā€ than is typical in an orchestra.

ā€œWe all love the classical traditions, but now it’s time to let our hair down,ā€ said cellist Rebecca Roudman. See a video of the orchestra here.

Riggers Loft is located on the Richmond waterfront at 1325 Canal Blvd. For more info, or to purchase tickets to the performance, click here.
