Hundreds of community members came out for the lively Music on the Main concert in downtown Richmond on Wednesday, the first of two free concerts as part of the 18th annual summer series.

Richmond’s own Zydeco King Andre Thierry and Soul and R&B band BeauFunk with Michael Jeffries performed in the parking lot at Marina Way and Macondald Avenue, just a block from the Richmond BART Station.

The event also featured family-friendly activities such as a youth zone, free book fair, giveaways and prizes, a beverage booth serving Main Street Margaritas and hometown brews by East Brother Beer Company, and a diverse array of local artisan and food trucks.

Richmond Councilmember Jael Myrick was the event’s Grand Marshall.

The second Music on the Main event will take place Wednesday, Aug. 28, same time and location, with performances from SambaFunk! and local favorite Latin Funk and Soul group GTS Band.

Music on the Main, one of many events held by the Richmond Main Street Initiative as part of an ongoing revitalization of downtown, is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, Mechanics Bank, San Francisco Bay Ferry, Cooperative Federal Credit Union, LifeLong Medical Care, AC Transit, Republic Services, Chevron Richmond, Richmond Build, East Brother Beer Company, and City of Richmond. Additional support comes from volunteers and the Downtown Richmond Property and Business Improvement District (DRPBID).
