An online bomb threat led to the evacuation of students and staff from the El Cerrito High campus Wednesday, school officials said.

In the early afternoon, the West Contra Costa Unified School District reported on Twitter that a threat against the school at 540 Ashbury Ave. was posted online. The campus was evacuated to allow police to conduct a search using bomb sniffing dogs, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia, whose daughter is an El Cerrito High student, reported on social media.

WCCUSD instructed parents and guardians to pick up students at Harding Elementary School at 7230 Fairmount Ave.

Gioia reported that students were safely evacuated.

WCCUSD reported at about 3 p.m. that El Cerrito police had searched and cleared the campus, allowing students to pick up their belongings. After-school activities remained cancelled, the district said. El Cerrito police have not yet provided any details on the investigation.

Gioia thanked El Cerrito police and WCCUSD for a swift and thorough response.
