Richmond city officials will host a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, March 25, to mark the transition into the main construction phase of the $34 million Main Library renovation. The 75-year-old building closed in mid-2025 for initial site preparation and safety work.

The ceremony will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at 325 Civic Center Plaza.

The renovation modernizes the 1949 structure while preserving its historic design as the first glass-fronted library in the U.S. The project includes seismic strengthening, new fire sprinklers, and high-performance windows. The building will become an all-electric facility with upgraded plumbing and electrical systems.

Interior improvements include an expanded children’s area and new furniture. The library will also serve as a community resiliency center. A new generator and solar power system will allow the building to stay open during power outages or extreme weather.

The $34.4 million budget comes from a $9.7 million California State Library grant and over $20 million in city funds. These funds cover construction, a new roof, and basement waterproofing. The City of Richmond Public Works Department is managing the project with Alten Construction, LLC. Construction should take about 18 months, with a planned reopening in the fall of 2027.

While the Main Library is closed, the city has opened a temporary branch at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium at 403 Civic Center Plaza. This site provides book browsing, computers, and family programs. The West Side and Bayview branches also remain open to the public.
