The Richmond Art Center announce today it has launched a national search for a new executive director to lead the organization toward its upcoming 100th anniversary.
Jeff Nathanson has served as interim executive director since September 2025, when he stepped in for José Rivera, who is on long-term medical leave.
A search committee made up of board members, staff, and community representatives is managing the process to hire a permanent leader. Interested applicants can find the full job description and application portal at richmondartcenter.org/executivedirector.
“We are seeking an inspiring leader to guide Richmond Art Center as we build on 90 years of service to our community and look ahead to our centennial,” Board President Nettie Hoge stated.
Applications are due by March 30, and the board aims to appoint a leader by the summer.
Artist Hazel Salmi launched the Richmond Art Center in 1936 through the federal Works Progress Administration. Salmi and local advocates successfully pushed for the center to be part of the city’s Civic Center development during the rapid growth of the World War II era, resulting in the 25,000-square-foot facility that opened in 1951. The center features a 2,200-square-foot main gallery, seven studio classrooms, a 12-member Board of Directors and a staff of 10 managing the center alongside 60 teaching artists each year. They provide studio classes, exhibitions, free school programs and other high-quality arts experiences in the community.
