The Richmond Steelers, a football and cheer team for 5-14 year olds, is hosting a “Giveaway” Saturday, Jan. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Richmond of all new items for families and youth.

“[We’re] starting the year by giving back to the community that gives so much to us,” stated the Richmond Steelers. Katrice West of the team’s Board of Directors said the “Giveaway” is open to all Richmond residents and will be the first of many more to come. The game plan is to have the Giveaways twice per year, once before the school year and then again before Christmas.

“The goal is to eliminate some of the hardships facing our communities and its residents. The potential this partnership has is limitless,” West said.

The first-ever event is going to be stocked with free toys, games, shoes, toiletries, housewares, athletic wear—and footballs, of course. The items were driven down from a nonprofit in Washington state—The Moore Wright Group—via a 42 ft. truck to deliver products to Richmond and reach as many families as possible, according to West.

The Moore Wright Group aims to break the cycle of poverty, abuse and abandonment in communities by providing hope. It’s vision is to create communities where everyone can thrive, according to its site.

West added that the organization “wanted to give back to urban communities,” and through their support, the Richmond Steelers will be able to help more than just its immediate family, but also other Richmond residents as well.

A community village pitched in to help with the “Giveaway” preparation. West said the Richmond Steelers reached out to Demnlus Johnson’s team for storage space and a location to distribute the products. The team worked with local nonprofit Bright Futures to sort through, store and distribute the truckload of items.

The “Giveaway” will take place rain or shine at 1060 Manor Road in Richmond. “Come out, spread love, and start 2026 surrounded by community,” stated the team.

It’s not the first act of giving back the team has engaged in recently. During the last year, the Richmond Steelers teamed up off the field one day a month during football season for “Monthly Community Cleanups” at Richmond parks.

“The Richmond Steelers are not only looking to build up the City of Richmond through our football and cheer program, but also through community with opportunities as this one,” said West about the “Giveaway.”
