An El Cerrito family launched a GoFundMe after a devastating apartment fire on Sunday left them without a home.

Sudha Timalsina Giri, her husband Ashish, their 7-month-old baby, and their 2-year-old dog were displaced when their apartment was destroyed in the recent fire, which occurred in a residential complex located behind the Public Safety Building parking lot at 10900 San Pablo Ave. The fire started on the first floor balcony and extended up the exterior of the building and into the attic, according to the El Cerrito-Kensington Fire Department.

While the family escaped unharmed, they lost all their belongings, including essential baby items, clothing, furniture, and household necessities.

Sudha had just returned to work last month after her maternity leave, while Ashish’s employment remains unstable. The sudden loss of their home has placed an immense emotional and financial strain on the young family.

“This has been a very difficult time, and asking for help isn’t easy,” Sudha said. “But any support — big or small — would mean the world to us right now. We are starting from scratch and trying to create a safe, stable home again for my baby and our pup.”
