One of two victims of a capsized boat near the Hercules shoreline on Saturday died, according to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office.

At about 3 p.m., Marine Services Unit deputy sheriffs were dispatched to the shoreline and located the capsized boat and one victim in distress. A Sheriff’s Office helicopter landed nearby and set up for a water rescue. A member of the helicopter crew was “short-hauled,” or suspended beneath it, in order to perform the water rescue.

The rescuer also located another victim about two feet underwater.

Both victims were taken to paramedics and eventually transported to nearby hospitals. One of the victims died as a result of the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Services Unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call (925) 754-0718.
