A groundbreaking ceremony will usher in the long-planned Boorman Park Revitalization Project on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 11:30 a.m.
The community-driven project will create a multi-use trail with fitness stations, a skating element, athletic field, basketball court, fitness zone, children’s play areas and a community gathering space at the 3-acre park at S. 25th Street and Maine Avenue. A public restroom, parking spaces, shade structure, landscaping, wayfinding and various safety features are part of the project, which is the result of a 2019 community-based parks needs assessment.
The needs assessment identified Boorman Park as a high-priority site due to high poverty rates in the area along with a large youth population amid safety concerns, according to Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez’s office.

“Local residents and city staff worked together to design an innovative park and secure state and federal funding, turning the community’s dream into reality,” his office states.
Rhea Elina Laughlin, executive director of Rising Juntos, said the investment into Boorman Park will “shape childhoods for generations to come.”
Added Mayor Martinez, “I’m proud that the city can help deliver on these aspirations and ensure our neighborhoods have welcoming, safe, and vibrant spaces to gather and play.”
The project received funding from the State Park Program (SPP) Proposition 68 grant funds and a California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) Clean California Local Grant.
