The Giants Community Fund recently teamed up with Chevron for a “STEM Education Day” at Willie Mays Field at Nicholl Park in Richmond.
About 40 players from the Junior Giants Girls Softball team picked up STEM tips related to their sport courtesy of Chevron and “Forever Giant” F.P. Santangelo, who played with the team during the 1999 season.
While Chevron delivered the science education, Santangelo helped with coaching and also gave out autographs and snapped photos with the young athletes.
Players participated in “The Giant Launch” activity and learned about launch angles, trajectory and velocity while launching squishy balls across the field. AnnaLaura Arredondo, a chemical engineer at Chevron, said she had a ball hanging out with the kids while teaching them about various aspects of science as it relates to baseball.
“We’re always looking to encourage STEM education with young athletes and hopefully create more engineers.”
“We’re always looking to encourage STEM education with young athletes and hopefully create more engineers,” added Derek Sheldon, also from Chevron.
Each child received a Chevron and San Francisco Giants branded soft baseball to take home—just like the ones they used in the launch activity.
“Huge thanks to Chevron for their support in bringing engaging STEM lessons to our Junior Giants participants,” posted the Giants Community Fund on Instagram.
The Giants Community Fund helps run the Junior Giants program; Richmond bears the distinction of being one of its first teams. Chevron has been supporting the Giants Community Fund for more than 30 years.
