Starting today, Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) will begin issuing PetHub ID tags for all new license applications, renewals and replacement licenses. The new partnership between CCAS and PetHub aims to ensure that more lost pets are returned to their families quickly, ultimately reducing the number of four-legged friends that enter the shelter, according to CCAS.

Through the PetHub system, an animal’s physical ID tag links to an online profile that can be opened via an encrypted connection by anyone with a mobile device, said CCAS. A profile can be updated free-of-charge at PetHub.com so a pet’s human can provide emergency contact info, which can include others who help care for the animal, i.e., family members, friends, pet sitters, veterinarians, etc.

Upgrade options include “found pet” alerts, GPS notifications and a method to broadcast a lost pet’s profile to local shelters and businesses, similar to a pet version of an “Amber alert,” added CCAS.
