John Gioia was selected today to become the 2019 chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Candace Andersen was selected as the Vice Chair at today’s Board meeting.
Gioia, has been representing District 1, or West County, as a supervisor since he was first elected in 1998. This is his fifth term as Board Chair.
Supervisor Gioia expressed appreciation for District 4 Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, the previous Board Chair, for her “leadership in maintaining our County’s strong fiscal position.”
At a County Lunch at the Craneway Pavilion that followed today’s Board meeting, Gioia stated his central focus for his Board leadership this year.
“As Chair this year I want to sharpen our county’s focus even more on the already important work that we do to support children and families,” Gioia said.
That includes “establishing a special Board committee to reduce childhood asthma,” he said.
Vice Chair Andersen has served the County since 2012 and was Board Chair in 2016.
The five-member Board of Supervisors sets the policy direction of county government and oversees its $3.74 billion budget.
