Own a home in California? Or do you hope to own a California home in the future?
Then you should know about Proposition 13.
Passed in 1978 by overtaxed residents, “Prop 13” has continued to protect property owners (and non-owners) in ways many do not understand.
The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA) drafted the proposal (see video below), and since then has been instrumental in other taxpayer protections, such as Propositions 218, 60 and 90 and many more.
Many people have forgotten, or are too young to remember, the history behind Prop 13, what it accomplished and how it operates today.
Your ad valorem tax bill explains where your money goes, but it is not always easy to find the allocations or the reasons behind them.
Do you feel you understand your taxes? What do YOU think could improve your tax situation?
David C. Wolfe, Legislative Analyst for HJTA, has a long and successful history of taxpayer advocacy. He will be speaking at the Ohlone Community Center, 190 Turquoise Ave., Hercules on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 3-5 p.m.
The event is free and open to all. No registration required. Sponsored for West Contra Costa County residents by the Contra Costa Taxpayers Association. Its website and contact info here: www.cocotax.org 925-289-6900 [email protected].
Susan L. Pricco is chair of the Contra Costa Taxpayers Association’s West County branch.
