A Contra Costa County judge on Monday sentenced 51-year-old Lawyer Dushan McBride of San Pablo to 95 years to life in state prison for the 2017 murder of Rashanda Franklin, a 30-year-old mother of two, whose killing was captured in a chilling 911 call that recorded her final words.

The sentencing, handed down by Judge Mary Ann O’Malley, follows McBride’s conviction earlier this year on charges including first-degree murder, stalking, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and use of a firearm causing death. His sentence consists of a determinate term of 20 years and four months, followed by an indeterminate term of 75 years to life.

According to prosecutors, McBride had been harassing and following Franklin for weeks after she ended their two-year relationship. On the morning of the murder, he waited for her in a church parking lot where she dropped off her children for school.

Franklin, fearful for her safety, called 911 and attempted to drive away with her children still in the car. As she neared the intersection of 29th Street and Rheem Avenue in Richmond, McBride cut off her vehicle, got out, and confronted her. The 911 recording captured her desperate plea — “I’ve got my kids in the car.” McBride responded, “I ain’t playing with you,” before fatally shooting her.

District Attorney Diana Becton described the case as a devastating reminder of the dangers of domestic violence.

“This tragic case underscores the devastating reality of domestic violence, which claims far too many lives,” Becton said in a statement. “While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless act of violence, this sentence provides the victim’s family with a measure of justice and accountability. It also sends a clear message that stalking and harassment are warning signs that must be taken seriously.”

The case has renewed calls for awareness and early intervention in domestic violence situations. Advocates urge anyone facing similar circumstances to seek help immediately.
