An 18-year-old Richmond man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the May 18 sexual assault that occurred along the Ohlone Greenway (BART Path) between Hill and Blake streets, according to the El Cerrito Police Department.
Malachi Attaway was taken into custody as he left the county courthouse in Martinez after appearing on a different case, police said.
Police allege that Attaway initially contacted the victim at Del Norte BART Station during the early morning hours of Sunday, May 18, before abducting and sexually assaulting her on the BART Path.
On Tuesday morning, El Cerrito police detectives who were investigating the case received notification from the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) that pointed to Attaway as a possible suspect. Police obtained an arrest warrant prior to taking Attaway into custody shortly after 8 a.m.
Attaway was booked on the warrant with a bail amount of $1.53 million. The case will be forwarded to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for review.  Â
