The Richmond Steelers youth football and cheer organization is looking forward to an exciting season with a new practice field at DeJean Middle School and also a special discount for signups for certain age groups.
The organization with teams for 5-to-14-year-olds is especially seeking 5-6 and 13-14-year-old boys and girls to join its tackle football teams.
“We are offering amazing discounts, and to sweeten the deal, the first 10 sign-ups will have their uniform costs and deposits completely waived,” said Richmond Steelers Board Member Katrice West, referring to sign-ups for these age-groups. Beyond the first 10 sign-ups, West said the price to play on the two teams would be discounted to $150 per player.
Families will have the opportunity to fundraise for any remaining fees, allowing participants to potentially play football for free, West added.
West expressed excitement for the new season and practice field at DeJean, which she says is more private and includes practice football lines that will help youth players grow. She expects the new location, steps away from the team’s old haunt at Nicholl Park, to attract more engagement from parents. And she expects parents will be more comfortable with leaving their kids at this location in comparison with the previous site.
A member of the American Youth Football (AYF) league, the Steelers are also looking forward to growing the organization, bringing back former players to become coaches and staff, as well as coordinating services with other Richmond businesses and families, said West.

Chipotle fundraiser
Team families and other community members can support a Chipotle fundraiser benefiting the Richmond Steelers Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 5-9 p.m. at the 4200 Klose Way, Suite B. Those ordering online for pickup at this Chipotle location can use the code HDWA4E4 or show the flyer in the restaurant. That night, 25 percent of the proceeds will be donated to support the team.
Steeler Raffle
The football and cheer teams also can sell raffle tickets “to tackle [their] fees” via the “Steeler Raffle” now through Aug. 1. Each raffle ticket book kids sell will be added to their season fee payment. Prizes include a 65-inch TV, $300 cash; a super box and more. Contact Coach Mike Vanhook for tickets at (510) 307-6532.
“Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to learn the game, develop teamwork skills, and make new friends,” said West.
