'Earth Day' offers volunteer opportunities throughout the month

Earth Day is on April 22 this year, but celebrations are happening throughout this month, and particularly on Saturday, April 19.

And by celebrations, we mean gardening, litter removal and other collaborative efforts to keep local spaces beautiful and inviting.

Urban Tilth is encouraging community members to attend one of two events on April 19: Unity Park Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1605 Ohio Ave.; and North Richmond Earth Day Celebration at North Richmond Ballpark from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

At the Unity Park event, volunteers will participate in gardening activities and will also have access to tie-dye activity, a smoothie bike, closet swap and upcycling clothing, petting zoo and live music.

The North Richmond event will have volunteers removing trash from the Wildcat Creek ecosystem and planting native plants to help the waterway flourish from 9-11 a.m. Also in conjunction with this event, Community Development Housing Corporation will host its annual celebration at Sheilds Reid Park until 2 p.m. The free event includes fun activities for the whole family along with resource tables.

On the same day, citywide work parties will spruce up pockets of El Cerrito, and separately, folks will gather at El Sobrante Library to clean up that neighborhood. Over in Pinole, an Earth Walk from 9-11 a.m. — also on April 19 — will involve community members pledging to protect the planet on a 3-mile loop along the bay and creek, starting and ending at Fernandez Park.
