A September parade along 23rd Street celebrating the independence of Latin American countries is becoming an annual tradition in Richmond and San Pablo.

The 2nd Annual “Paz y Unidad Fiestas Patrias Parade” is scheduled for Sept. 13 at 10 a.m., organizers announced this week.

The Cinco de Mayo Parade Committee created the “Fiestas Patrias Parade” after rain postponed the traditional Richmond/San Pablo Cinco de Mayo Parade last year. Now, the Committee is no longer holding a parade in early May, and is instead focusing attention on holding the annual Fiestas Patrias parade in September, the month during which multiple Latin American countries celebrate their independence. Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, Costa Rica, Brazil and Belize will all be represented at the Sept. 13 parade, organizers said.

While the Cinco de Mayo parade will no longer happen in Richmond, the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival that brings tens of thousands of people to 23rd Street for live entertainment, activities and food, will go on. Sponsored by the 23rd Street Merchants Association, this year’s festival will take place on Sunday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 23rd St. in Richmond.

The September 2025 Paz y Unidad Fiestas Patrias Parade is set to wind its way through Richmond and San Pablo along the traditional 23rd Street corridor, symbolizing the strong connection between the neighboring communities, said organizers. It will start at 10 a.m. at 23rd St. & Barrett Ave. in Richmond and end at St. Paul Church in San Pablo at 1 p.m.

Traditional music, dance performances, vibrant floats and cultural showcases representing rich histories and heritage will add to the parade’s spectacle.

“This event continues to grow and solidify its place as a cornerstone of our community’s cultural celebrations,” said Genoveva Calloway, co-chair of the Parade Planning Committee.

“Seeing the way the community has embraced this tradition is truly inspiring. We are looking forward to making 2025 even more spectacular!”
