Pogo Park, the nonprofit organization that created the ever-expanding Harbour-8 Park in Richmond’s Iron Triangle and is currently in the middle of constructing a community center in the heart of that park, has launched a capital campaign to raise $3 million to complete the community center project, located near Harbour Way, the Richmond Greenway and Ohio Avenue.

Former Richmond Mayor Tom Butt recently toured the emerging center, which is slated to become Contra Costa County’s first Community Resilience Center (CRC). The CRC will provide shelter and resources during emergencies, as well as year-round services and programming. Pogo Park received a $10 million grant from the California’s Strategic Growth Council to construct the CRC, which is designed and built with staff and resources largely from the neighborhood. Butt reports that more funding is needed due to “unexpected expenses remediating soil along the former railroad right-of-way.”

The former mayor called the project “beautiful.”

“On the same site are temporary workshops where neighborhood craftsperson’s were building exquisite benches for the site,” he said, adding, “This area of the Iron Triangle is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance, with new and recently completed projects all around.”
