A Richmond man was arrested in connection with a shooting that stemmed from a road rage incident in Pinole on Monday, Dec. 9.
Pinole police responded to the scene around 7:40 p.m. Dec. 9 and learned a gunshot victim was seeking treatment at the emergency department at Kaiser Richmond.
Officers determined from witness statements that the incident began as road rage on the eastbound I-80 Appian Way offramp. The incident continued onto Appian Way and ended on Fitzgerald Drive, when one of the drivers shot a passenger inside the other vehicle, police said.
The victim, a 24-year-old Richmond man, was driven by his girlfriend to Kaiser Richmond. The victim was then transferred to a trauma center in critical condition. He is currently in stable condition although he remains hospitalized, police said.
Pinole police responded to the hospital and received new details about the shooting. Detectives also discovered surveillance camera footage capturing the shooting. That footage was used to identify the suspect vehicle.
After sharing that information with other law enforcement agencies, the Richmond Police Department reported finding the suspect vehicle the following day in Richmond. The day after the shooting, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, the suspect was located and taken into custody.
He was identified as Otis Keller, 25, and he was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.
A subsequent search warrant served on the suspect’s home uncovered evidence of the crime including several firearms.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has charged Keller with shooting at an occupied vehicle, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm resulting in great bodily injury, and possession of an assault weapon. His bail was set at $1.25 million and he remains in custody.
The investigation is ongoing and additional weapons charges are being considered, police said.
