If the idea of overseeing an inn on an island in San Francisco Bay—alongside an 1874 lighthouse—puts some kick in your step, an available job just might be right for you.

East Brother Light Station, Inc. is on the lookout for applicants for keepers due to its current ones, Dre and Charity Elmore, leaving in late March 2025. The Elmores served a two-year term, a typical run for those working in the position. The new keepers will start in April 2025, according to East Brother Light Station Board President and former Mayor Tom Butt in his E-Forum.

Candidates well-suited for the position will be a couple, with one person possessing a Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential NMC boat operator’s license. Excellent culinary skills and the proficiency to operate a five-room inn offering breakfast and dinner are essential. Tasks at the inn—which is open four days a week—span the gamut from serving as chef and maid to ferry service operator for guests. The inn is also open for day use and special events.

Over the last two-year period, compensation for East Brother Light Station’s keepers has averaged $140,000 and includes a health plan and living quarters on the island. Butt said that compensation is “trending upward” and relates to business and occupancy levels, as well as the economy.
