“Soulful Softball Sunday” will make its 10th annual return Sunday, Aug. 18 at Nicholl Park in Richmond, with games kicking off at 9 a.m. This year’s event is sponsored by Nuvision Credit Union.

The day will not only see men’s and women’s softball games, but also double as “Irma Anderson Day,” after the first black woman to serve on the Richmond City Council and also as the city’s mayor. The day will also honor past and present legends of the city, including Zelon Harrison, Onna Alexander, Jerry Anderson, Barbara Saucer, Ron Shaw, Andre Bean, Thalia Hassan, Dr. Kenneth Hurst, Ricky Jefferson and Dr. Ramona Bishop.

Soulful Softball Sunday’s men will play the Richmond Elite, Nicaraguan All Stars, Berkeley Bomb Squad and the Eilis Crew, while the women team up against Player’s Choice and One Unit.

The free-admission event will also include a giveaway of 200-300 backpacks (no need to sign-up in advance), a raffle of hundreds of dollars’ worth of gift cards, free Soulful Softball Sunday T-shirts, 50-70 community vendors/resources plus music by D.J. Alex and D.J. Ron. Food will not be served, so attendees are encouraged to bring their own.

Alcohol or cannabis selling or consuming is not permitted on the premises.

“The largest grassroots community liaison in the City of Richmond, Soulful Softball Sunday, brings you another experience that you will never forget,” said organizer Rodney Alamo Brown about the event.
