One person suffered minor injuries and two pets were killed in a fire at an apartment complex in Richmond Sunday afternoon.
The fire occurred in a second-floor apartment unit just after 1 p.m. in the 2400 block of Aberdeen Way, according to Richmond Firefighters Local 188, the union that represents city firefighters.
Both crews from RFD and Con Fire teamed up to bring the flames under control within 15 minutes. The fire caused extensive damage to the unit and partially spread to the third floor unit directly above it, which luckily was vacant and unoccupied, fire officials said.
While two pets were tragically killed in the fire, firefighters successfully rescued a half dozen other pets, including five cats and a dog, Local 188 said.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known. Local 188 posted video at the fire scene and urged residents to have working smoke alarms and an emergency escape.
