The Contra Costa Fire Protection District held its annual memorial service for Captain Matt Burton and Engineer Scott Desmond at the Con Fire Training and Safety Division Memorial Wall and Garden in Concord on Friday, July 21.

Con Fire leaders, employees and family members gathered to pay tribute to Burton and Desmond, who made the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to rescue an elderly couple from a San Pablo house fire on July 21, 2007.

The service took place on the 16th anniversary of their tragic deaths.

In 2021, the new Fire Station 70 in San Pablo was dedicated in their honor.
