A man was fatally struck in the westbound lanes of I-80 east of Richmond Parkway on Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP responded to the highway just before 9 p.m. and found a man lying on the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Fire Department personnel.

The preliminary investigation indicates the man was struck by a Toyota that attempted to swerve to miss him, but was unsuccessful. The driver pulled over and was cooperative during the investigation, the CHP added.

The driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and it’s not yet known whether the pedestrian was intoxicated at the time, according to the CHP.

The deceased man’s identity hasn’t been released.
