United Parcel Services (UPS) is looking to expand and modernize its distribution center at 1601 Atlas Road in Richmond.
The Atlas Road site encompasses 63.3 acres and currently includes a 184,000 square foot distribution center with an auto repair facility, customer service center and car wash.
According to city documents, the company’s architect, Ware Malcomb, is seeking design review approval to construct a new 350,000 square foot “tilt-up building with open areas for sorting and distributing packages.” The project also includes rear docks for truck access, remodeling the tractor-trailer buildings, renovating the guard shack and constructing a new parking area for employees and customers.
“The applicant proposes to expand their operations in a newly designed facility to accommodate the latest technology to increase productivity in the fast-growing shipping business,” city documents state.
The UPS Atlas Road property is bound to the east by homes and Montalvin Elementary, and to the west by wetlands that would not be disturbed by the proposed building’s construction, city documents state.
The ppoposed expansion project is set to be discussed at the Richmond Design Review Board hearing on Sept. 25.
