Bay Area residents are mourning the death of Doug McConnell, the longtime television host who spent decades introducing locals to the region’s natural wonders.
McConnell died on Tuesday night, Jan. 13, at the age of 80, in the wake of a stroke suffered in 2023.
Best known as the host of the hit programs Bay Area Backroads and OpenRoad with Doug McConnell, his work focused on making the outdoors accessible to a general audience and explaining the importance of land preservation.
The East Bay Regional Park District (Park District) began a long-running partnership with McConnell in 1993. For over 30 years, he worked with district staff to produce stories about local trails, conservation efforts, and wildlife protection. Park District officials described him as a thoughtful journalist whose commitment to community and public service left a lasting impact on the East Bay.
McConnell’s involvement with the East Bay parks went beyond his television career, as he frequently served as the master of ceremonies for major community events. He presided over the Park District’s 65th and 75th anniversary celebrations, annual fundraisers for the Regional Parks Foundation, and the Healthy Parks, Healthy People festival. During the COVID-19 pandemic, McConnell partnered with the district to promote parks as an essential service. He produced public service announcements and special episodes that highlighted how spending time in nature supported mental and physical health during the lockdown.
The Park District highlighted several key programs McConnell produced that now serve as historical records of the region. These include the 2019 production East Bay Regional Parks For All, which explored accessibility in public lands, and the 2020 special The East Bay Regional Parks Respond to COVID-19, which documented the surge in park usage during the pandemic. His most recent collaboration, The Most Visited Park District in California, aired in 2023 and focused on the District’s role in the local community.
In a tribute shared by the OpenRoad team, colleagues noted that McConnell remained an optimist until the end, joyfully encouraging everyone to explore and appreciate the beauty and diversity of natural lands.
