Contra Costa College (CCC) today announced that its storied football program will not participate in the 2024 season “as part of a strategic revitalization effort aimed at ensuring long-term success.”

Rather than prep and field a team this season, Comets coaches and staff will focus on “recruitment and resource enhancement,” with the aim of returning with a stronger program in 2025.

“This pause allows us to focus on building the foundation necessary for sustained success,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Rogers, president of Contra Costa College, adding that CCC remains “fully committed to the future of Comets football.”

The college says it is taking steps to connect impacted players to other opportunities.

“We understand that this news may be disappointing to our students, alumni, and supporters,” Dr. Rogers added. “However, we are confident that this focused approach will enable us to build a stronger, more resilient Comets football team for the future.”

The Comets football program competes in the highly competitive Bay Valley Conference and has developed a reputation for producing top talent, such as NFL legend Benny Barnes and current NFL pro Tak McKinley.
