The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) is grieving the sudden loss of Principal Christopher “Chris” Pierce, who passed away unexpectedly on July 4. He was 45.
Once a product of the district himself, he most recently served as principal of De Anza High School and had just been appointed principal of Betty Reid Soskin Middle School in El Sobrante.
WCCUSD Superintendent Cheryl Cotton described him as “a powerful change‑maker that cared deeply about kids, staff, and families… always grounded in love for the community that shaped him,” underscoring his deep commitment to students and families alike.
Board member Jamela Smith‑Folds Ward shared that Pierce brought joy and unity wherever he went: “He truly lit up a room when he entered. From his smiles to his jokes, Chris made everyone feel better… he listened to all of them.” The Board member further described Pierce as “a dad and a son and a cousin.”
“He was a role model for generations of kids.”
