Richmond preps for first public Nowruz celebration

The City of Richmond and the Diaspora Arts Connection are inviting the community to attend the first public Nowruz celebration this Saturday, March 22.The vibrant festival, which is free and open to everyone, will mark the Persian New Year and the arrival of Spring from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Marina Bay Park in Richmond.

Nowruz, meaning “New Day” in Persian language, has been celebrated for over 3,000 years across many cultures, symbolizing renewal, joy, and community, according to city organizers. The word is also spelled as Norooz, Nawrouz, Novruz, Nowrouz, Nawrouz, Nauryz, Nooruz, Navruz, Nevruz and other variations.

The Richmond celebration will feature live music, traditional dance, food and family-friendly activities. The schedule of performers includes Miriam Peretz and her Nava Dancers, musicians Amir Etemadzadeh, Mohammad Ebrahimi, and Aydin Shaterian and DJ Dr. T.

Richmond Councilmember Soheila Bana encouraged the community join the fun.

“This is the first public Nowruz celebration in the Bay Area and deserves support as a celebration of all immigrant communities,” Bana said.
