Richmond officials are working on a new plan to fix the all-weather sports field at Martin Luther King Jr. Park after complaints about safety issues.

During a recent meeting of the Richmond Recreation and Parks Commission, Vice Chair Samantha Torres, who also serves as president of the Richmond United Soccer Club, raised concerns about the playing field’s artificial turf. She said the seams on the field keep coming apart, creating holes that can trip and injure children during games. In the past, getting these issues fixed took several months.

“As a reminder, there was a massive hole in the penalty box for three months that children had to play on because they had nowhere else to go,” Torres said.

To solve this, Public Works staff said they are preparing a request for proposal to hire a vendor that will maintain, clean, and fix the turf field. Darin Fitzpatrick, who assumed the role of assistant deputy director of Operations & Maintenance last year, assured the commission that the city is changing how it handles these repairs.

“The issues that we had in the past were not from us and we don’t operate that way,” Fitzpatrick said. “So we will be prepared for any issues.”

The city also got approval to buy new equipment to help city workers take better care of the field and prevent long delays in the future.

Relief for local sports leagues is on the horizon, as the city is scheduled to host a grand opening on July 11 for a brand-new synthetic turf field at Shields-Reid Park. The new facility is part of a larger push for upgraded youth athletic resources across Richmond, which also includes field renovations currently underway at Wendell and Boorman parks.
