The Bermudez family, known for their successful restaurant ventures in Point Richmond, recently acquired the Extreme Pizza franchise in the same neighborhood. The family also operate Masa Tamales & Taqueria in Point Richmond, a smaller Masa Tamales & Taqueria on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond, and Johnny Boi Smash Burger, also in the Point.
“My brother Kyle, who has always been passionate about pizza, will be running the operations at Extreme Pizza,” said Johnny Bermudez, a spokesperson for the family business. “We operate as a family, and we wanted to bring our unique touch to Extreme Pizza.”
The Bermudez family took over Extreme Pizza three weeks ago and quickly got to work on giving the establishment a fresh look. “We gave it a complete facelift,” Johnny said. “Everything inside is new, from the tables and counters to the murals on the walls.” The Richmond restaurateur said Extreme Pizza is more of a hang-out spot now with TVs and a sports vibe.
The Bermudez family has also introduced new menu items to reflect their culinary heritage. According to Johnny, the family has brought in specials like birria pizza, carne asada pizza and al pastor pizza. The additions are inspired by the family’s Masa restaurants, which feature Mexican fare with his mother, Rose’s, culinary influence.
The opportunity to purchase Extreme Pizza arose when the previous owner approached Johnny with the opportunity to purchase the restaurant. For Johnny, it’s a scenario that’s happened before.
“We’ve been approached by other cities, but we feel like we belong here,” he said, noting that San Francisco, Albany, Pinole and the City Councils from surrounding areas have reached out to them regarding the family setting up restaurants in their cities. “But we’re [Richmond] locals and I feel like we belong here in this area if God allows.”
In addition to the Bermudez family’s other restaurants, they’ve also purchased the former Great American Hamburger and Pie Company spot in Point Richmond, but are still deciding on the game plan for it. “We’re still working on it, but it’s going to be something special,” Johnny said.
